HELP HAITIAN EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS
Dear Friends,The United Church of Christ has launched an emergency appeal for Haiti after a major earthquake struck the country yesterday. Thousands of people are feared dead and countless have been left homeless. The need is massive. Your gifts are needed to support immediate and long-term relief. The 7.0 quake struck 10 miles southwest of the capital just before nightfall on January 12. Our Global Ministries personnel, Kim, Patrick and Solomon Bentrott, have reported to us that they are safe.It is still too early to know the full extent of the damage, but we are expecting very high loss of life, widespread destruction of homes, schools and other buildings, and major damage to key water, electricity and road systems. Funds from the UCC's One Great Hour of Sharing are being rushed to our Haitian partners to support their initial emergency response. However, your generous donations are needed to provide the greatest level of support for the victims of this terrible disaster.Your prayers and monetary support are needed. Arlington Food Shelf Tucked away on the quiet side of Old Mill Road, in what used to be the village library, the Arlington Food Shelf is the driving force that keeps food on the tables of more than 65 families in Bennington County.
While no one is exactly sure when the food shelf opened, board members John and Patricia Clancy and food shelf helper Grace Hitchcock have been volunteering for more than15 years each. They have seen the food shelf undergo many positive changes over the years—from new floors, to a new roof, and fresh coats of paint—all giving the Arlington Food Shelf a cozy and welcoming feel.
John, Patricia and Grace say Director Jack Gunther is the catalyst responsible for the transformation of the food shelf. Jack is devoted to reaching out to local banks, businesses and service organizations in order to gain their support with the food shelf. One such supporter is Mack Molding, a local business that funded 75 Thanksgiving dinners last fall. The meals not only included turkeys and all the fixings, but also roasting pans to cook them in and apple pies for dessert.
The Regional Affordable Housing Corporation (RAHC) is also a strong supporter of the Arlington Food Shelf. Last fall, RAHC made property available to the food shelf so that they were able to open The Helping Hand, a free clothing shop where patrons of the food shelf are able to select slightly used clothing at no cost. This shop has been particularly helpful to families with small children.
This summer, the Arlington Food Shelf is spearheading efforts with 18 organizations to launch the “Arlington Area Summer Lunch Program” at the Fisher Elementary School. This program will provide lunch to an estimated 70 children for 10 weeks during school vacation, when free school meals are unavailable. As Jack says, “When you do good things, good things happen.”
The Arlington Food Shelf is located at 165 Old Mill Rd, and they are open on the 1st & 3rd Tuesday of each month from 1:30-4PM.
